Description
Orava Castle, located on a high rock above the Orava River in Oravský Podzámok, Slovakia, dates back to the 13th century with expansions through the early 17th century. This historically layered castle, originally Romanesque and Gothic, was later rebuilt in Renaissance and Neo-Gothic styles, perched on a 520-meter rock spur.
The castle's dramatic setting was used as Count Orlok's Transylvanian castle in the 1922 film Nosferatu. Its history includes fortifications after the 1241 Mongol invasion, periods of construction, destruction, fires, and changing ownerships.
After touring the castle, enjoy traditional Slovak dishes, fresh sheep and cow cheeses, and Slovak cakes at a shepherd's hut near Ružomberok or Dolný Kubín.
Optionally, stop at a cheese factory in Zázrivá to make your own sheep cheese. Participants wear traditional work clothing, learn ancient cheese-making secrets, stretch cheese threads called 'vojka,' knit whips, and print cheese shapes in hand-carved wooden molds. Finished cheeses are brined, packaged, and taken home. This activity lasts about 45 minutes, costs 20 euros per person, requires advance booking, and accommodates up to six people.
