Museum of Popular Architecture in Nitra
Slovakia
Part of the exhibition area of Agrokomplex in Nitra is occupied by the Museum of Popular Architecture and Material Culture.
Its focus is unique in Slovakia, as it explores agricultural activities of people living in rural areas.
The Museum of Nitra displays interesting items and documents, which try to show visitors life of farmers in the lowlands of south Slovakia in the past. It contains 33 structures collected all over Slovakia among them beehives, a school, bakery, dairy, a plant producing oils, a mill, sheep dairy farm, a winter stable or haylofts.
One of special exhibits of the Museum is the narrow-gauged field steam railway, which was once operated by the landowner of Želiezovce. The train was used for hauling the harvested products. Now it transports tourists around the area of the open-air museum and stops at a small railway station next to the main entrance to the exhibition area.
A variety of interesting cultural events, as well as all-year-round and seasonal displays of crafts and technical equipment, provide an attractive complement to the exhibition.
