Calvinist Church in ?e?ejovce

The restoring staff managed to uncover the valuable medieval fresco paintings, which are now considered the national cultural monument.

The church is situated near the main road approximately in the middle of today’s village. It was originally a Catholic church, but later, during the Rákóczi Uprising in 1703, it became the property of the Reformed Church to which it has belonged up to the present day. It is assumed that in this period the interior wall paintings from the first half of the 14th century were covered by plaster.

The valuable fresco paintings were uncovered again and at the end of the 20th century they were restored. Their restoration ended in 1994 and later the paintings were proclaimed the national cultural monument.

This church with one aisle preserved its early Gothic exterior look. What is more, it has a few well-preserved small late Romanesque windows from the period when this church was constructed. The other windows were added later. The level ceiling is modern and it dates back to the 19th century. The church does not have a tower, however, there is a wooden belfry with a stone groundwork built next to it.

In the village you can see also other interesting historical buildings. The Roman Catholic Church was built in 1800 in classicistic style and lately it has undergone some renovations. Not far from the church, there is a classicist manor house built by the Szirmay family in the second half of the 18th century. Its main gate from the 19th century has almost the original look. The manor house is being reconstructed at the moment.

The village of Čečejovce has a lot to offer to those who are keen on history. And if you are into hiking as well, you can visit the nearby Slovak Karst National Park with its Zádielska Karst Canyon and exquisite plains!
