Museum of Croatian Culture in Slovakia
Slovakia
The museum specializes in the presentation of the history of the Croatian ethnic minority in Slovakia.
Croats first arrived in significant numbers in Slovakia during the 16th century, following the Ottoman Turkish occupation of the southern part of the Hungarian Kingdom, which at that time included Croatia. Devínska Nová Ves still has a Croatian-speaking community, and is now the location of the Museum of Croatian Culture in Slovakia, a specialized branch of the Slovak National Museum.
The museum, housed in a modern building, documents the cultural and spiritual legacy of the Croats who settled in Slovakia, as well as their connection to fellow emigrants who ended up in nearby Moravia (in the Czech Republic), western Hungary and eastern Austria. The displays, which are labelled in English, include folk costumes, handicrafts and books used by the Croatian community. Among the latter are 19th-century prayer books that were published in the Croatian language, read in Slovakia, but which used Hungarian orthography – suggesting the curious blend of languages and cultures which existed in this part of the Hungarian Kingdom.
