An exhibition permanently housed in the Zsigray Mansion in Bratislava aims at the presentation of Jewish material and spiritual culture and the documentation of holocaust in Slovakia.
Slovakia was once home to a thriving Jewish community, but it was largely destroyed during World War II and Bratislava is now one of the few Slovak cities where a sizeable Jewish community still exists. However, the city's Jewish legacy was further damaged by postwar building projects. The large Moorish synagogue that once stood close to St Martin's Cathedral was demolished prior to construction of the New Bridge in the 1960's, as was most of the ancient Jewish quarter under the castle.
The Museum of Jewish Culture, a specialized branch of the Slovak National Museum, is housed in one of the few extant buildings on Židovská (Jewish) Street, Zsigray's Mansion. It documents the spiritual and material Jewish culture of Slovakia, and the Holocaust in Slovakia. The museum's exhibits include rare items of Judaica such as ceramic vessels used by an 18th-century Jewish burial society, and documents recording the persecution and deportation of Jews during World War II.
The collections and exhibitions present to the public objects of everyday life, documents and objects of visual art. The museum also administers four exhibitions displayed in the synagogues in Žilina, Prešov, Trnava and Nitra.
